President Joe Biden gave President Vladimir Putin two U.S. approaches to Russia. They will depend on further actions of Moscow. This is reported by the UNN, citing a briefing by a senior White House official.
"President Joe Biden outlined two ways, two aspects of the U.S. approach that depend on Russian actions in the coming period. The first is the path of diplomacy, leading to de-escalation of the situation. The other path is more focused on containment, including serious costs and consequences if Russia chooses to invade Ukraine. These costs include economic measures," he said.
Note that Russian and U.S. presidents Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden have confirmed that the upcoming security talks will have both areas where meaningful progress can be made and areas where agreement may not be possible, an administration official noted.
The United States continues to believe that other countries have the right to decide for themselves whether or not to join NATO, despite Russia's views on potential further expansion of the North Atlantic Alliance, the official stressed.
