Foreign Ministry urges Georgia not to transfer hospitalized Saakashvili back to prison

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has called on Georgia to treat the expresident of Georgia, Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili with respect and not to allow actions endangering his health and life, the Foreign Ministry said after attempts to transfer Saakashvili from a military hospital in Gori back to a penitentiary institution.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry noted that these actions were carried out "improperly."

"The lawyers were not informed about the relevant decision of the penitentiary service of Georgia. Mikhail Saakashvili's state of health does not allow this. He needs further rehabilitation. We urge the Georgian authorities to treat the citizen of Ukraine with respect and not to allow actions that pose a threat to his life and health," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs underlined.

The report added that Ukrainian diplomats are in contact with the Georgian authorities and Mikheil Saakashvili's lawyers, to whom the consul of the Ukrainian Embassy in Georgia must be allowed on December 29.

Also, the Georgian side is being urged to allow Ukrainian doctors to visit and examine Saakashvili.

"We continue to work on his return to Ukraine for humanitarian reasons for treatment and rehabilitation. The need for such a step is obvious," the Foreign Ministry adds.
