NATO helps Ukraine exercise its right to self-defense - Stoltenberg

Ukraine as a sovereign state has the right to self-defense, and NATO helps our country realize this right by strengthening and enhancing the capabilities of its Armed Forces. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said this at a press conference in Riga, according to the NATO website.

"Our main goal is to deter Russia from aggressive military action against Ukraine. This is the message of all allies - not to violate the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, as Russia did before, occupying Crimea, and in fact does it now, destabilizing eastern Ukraine," said Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

He said the Alliance is providing political and practical assistance to Ukraine: allies are training and helping develop military capabilities and equipment.

"This is real support that raises the threshold for Russia to commit aggressive military actions against Ukraine. Such efforts by NATO strengthen Ukraine's Armed Forces - it's a way to help them exercise their sovereign right to self-defense. It is the right of every sovereign state. And we will support Ukraine in exercising this sovereign right of self-defense," Jens Stoltenberg said.
