Austria was the first in the European Union to make vaccination against coronavirus compulsory for everyone. The country is also introducing a full national lockdown.
According to Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg, Austria will introduce universal quarantine and compulsory vaccination against COVID. He also clarified that vaccination will become mandatory on February 1, 2022, and the lockdown will take effect as early as Monday.
"Despite months of entreaties, we haven't been able to convince enough people to get vaccinated," Shallenberg noted.
The national lockdown means that people will only be able to leave their homes to go shopping for basic necessities and to exercise. Since the beginning of this week, a national lockdown has been in effect for the unvaccinated.
