What are the consequences of stopping coal supplies from Russia to Ukraine - Ministry of Energy

Russia has stopped the transit of coal from Kazakhstan, which was going to Ukraine. About this in his Telegram-channel said the chairman of the parliamentary Committee on energy and housing and communal services, MP Andrei Gerus, writes UNN.

"The Russian Federation stopped the transit of coal from Kazakhstan, which was going to Ukraine. All relevant supplies in November blocked," Gerus wrote. According to him, technically the blockage is at the level of Russian Railways, which does not confirm the passage of cars with coal from Russia.

As a reminder, last week it became known that the Russian Federation is stopping deliveries of steam coal to Ukraine since November. On what will be the consequences of this decision for Ukrainian citizens, UNN asked the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.

"In November, Ukrainian companies plan to increase the share of imports compared to October due to the diversification of coal supply sources," the ministry replied.

According to the press service, Ukrainian companies already have contracts for coal supplies in November from Poland, Kazakhstan and South Africa. Thus, the state-owned company Centrenergo plans to import about 200 thousand tons of coal from these countries.

"Negotiations are also underway with suppliers from the United States of America," the Energy Ministry said.

At the same time, the ministry notes that the operation of thermal generation is mainly provided by Ukrainian coal.

Thus, according to the Ministry of Energy, in October, thermal power plants received more than 1.1 million tons of coal of own production - it is 85% of the total supply.

"In November it is planned to increase the supply of domestic coal to 1.4 million tons.

The Ministry of Energy monitors the receipt and triggering of coal at thermal power plants on a daily basis. Coal is supplied to thermal power plants rhythmically enough to ensure uninterrupted operation of generation. As of October 29th, 35 thermal power units and 11 nuclear power units are in operation," the press service informed.

Also, according to the ministry, over 8 months of 2021 coal miners in Ukraine produced 1,290.7 thousand tons more coal (or 7.0%) compared to the same period last year. Including the production of steam coal increased by 752.6 thousand tons (or 5.3%).

"According to the legislation, the Ministry of Energy cannot interfere in the economic activities of business entities, and it is the enterprises that must provide the necessary volumes of coal reserves. At the same time, the Ministry of Energy has taken all necessary measures to create both organizational and financial opportunities for the accumulation of coal," the ministry said.

It should be recalled that last week the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Energy and Housing and Communal Services, MP Andriy Gerus of the "Servants of the People" said that the Russian Federation has stopped supplies of steam coal to Ukraine since November.
