"The economic situation and national interests in the country require that all Afghans use the Afghan currency in their trade," said in a Taliban statement given to journalists by one of their representatives.


The use of U.S. dollars in Afghanistan's markets is common, while border areas use the currency of neighboring countries like Pakistan to trade.


The Taliban government is pushing for the return of billions of dollars from central bank reserves as the drought-stricken country faces cash shortages, mass starvation and a new migration crisis.
