Co-authors of the Nobel laureate in 2021 in chemistry Benjamin Liszt are scientists of KNU. T. Shevchenko. This was announced by the Maksymovych Scientific Library on Wednesday, October 6.

«We are proud of the researchers of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv Oleksandr Olehovych Hryhorenko, Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry, Ph.D. (Faculty of Chemistry Taras Shevchenko National University), Igor Volodymyrovych Komarov (Taras Shevchenko National University Institute of High Technologies) and Andriy Volodymyrovych Tymtsunyk, a former graduate student, who are co-authors of the 2021 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Benjamin Liszt in the message,» he said.

Benjamin Liszt and David Macmillan won the 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Their names were announced by the Nobel Committee on October 6.

It is noted that the award was given for the development of asymmetric organocatalysis.

As the Nobel Committee said, catalysts are only metals and enzymes, but about 20 years ago Liszt and Macmillan independently developed a third type of catalysis – using a framework of carbon atoms, which can be attached to atoms of more active elements, including oxygen, sulfur or phosphorus.

Such catalysts are environmentally friendly, cheap to manufacture and will help to create new drugs more efficiently or increase the efficiency of solar panels.

The size of the Nobel Prize in 2021 is ten million Swedish kronor (1.1 million dollars). Liszt and Macmillan will share this amount equally.
