Legislation of Georgia: New LGBT initiatives from the ruling party

The Georgian Dream party submits a package of bills to the Georgian parliament that would restrict LGBT rights. In particular, this package includes the draft law “On Family Values and Protection of Minors” and amendments to other 18 laws. This was stated by the Georgian publication Front News Geogria.

At a briefing, the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili announced that the package includes a ban on the registration of alternative marriages, adoption of children by non-heterosexuals, gender reassignment surgery, and “LGBT propaganda” in education and the media.

The initiative also bans intimate scenes between persons of the same sex and incest scenes in television programs and cinemas. According to Papuashvili, this practice is widespread.

Papuashvili also announced the establishment of a day off on Family Day (May 17) and the introduction of relevant amendments to the Labor Code.

The bills are planned to be approved at the first reading during the spring session, and the second and third readings during the autumn session. Taking into account the number of votes that the ruling party has, the probability of approval of the initiative is high.
