The right to peaceful assembly and freedom of speech are basic human rights and the basis of democracy, commented US State Department representative Vedant Patel on the detention of citizens at a rally on June 2 in Tbilisi.

 "The lack of tolerance for dissent is incompatible with the values of the Euro-Atlantic family of nations, which the majority of the population of Georgia wants to join," said a representative of the State Department.

 Earlier, the US Embassy made a similar statement.

 It is about the events in Tbilisi last Friday. Eight people were detained by the police at a small peaceful youth demonstration near the parliament building for posters that the law enforcement officers considered offensive. Even blank posters without inscriptions caused the irritation of the police.

 The participants of the action accused the government of a pro-Russian course and expressed support for Beke Grigoriadis, who was fined 2,000 GEL by the court - the father of Lazare Grigoriadis, who is accused of attacking police officers during the March actions about "foreign agents".
