The current head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will become the new president of Latvia

The Diet of Latvia elected the current Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkevičs as the new president of the country.

 In the third round of voting, which left two candidates - Rinkevichs and Uldis Pilens - the first received 52 votes, which is enough to be elected. The votes of the Social Democrats played a decisive role, as their candidate Elina Pinto was eliminated after the second round.

 

 In the first two rounds of voting, 42 deputies voted for Rinkevichs.

 

 In his address to the Seimas, the newly elected president thanked the parliamentarians who supported him and those who voted against him, and promised to do everything in his power for the security, unity and prosperity of the country and to closely cooperate with the Seimas and the government.

 

 It is currently unknown who will replade Rinkevichs as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
