The USA can provide Ukraine with cluster munitions

Ukraine asked the US to provide cluster munitions. The request is currently being considered by the administration of President Joe Biden. CNN reports this with reference to its own sources among Ukrainian and American officials, UNN reports.

According to the publication, cluster munitions will be able to be provided to Ukraine when stocks of other munitions in the warehouses of Western partners are exhausted.

For Ukraine, cluster munitions could solve two main problems. The first is the need for more ammunition for artillery and missile systems provided by the United States and other countries. The second is the elimination of Russia's superiority in artillery.

In the US, this issue has not yet been seriously considered, because Congress has imposed restrictions on the transfer of cluster munitions. President Joe Biden could get around that restriction, but CNN sources say that's unlikely anytime soon.

"Ukraine's ability to succeed in the current and future stages of the war does not in any way depend on and is not related to the acquisition of the specified ammunition," said the congressman's assistant.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, both Ukraine and Russia have been using cluster munitions. However, the Russians use them in attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Neither the US nor Ukraine has signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions, which bans their use and production because of the potential risk to civilians. But the US began phasing out cluster munitions in 2016 because they contain hundreds of explosives that often remain unexploded.
