Peace talks with Russia should be held only after Russia's defeat, - British Foreign Office

Negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin will not lead to peace now. Therefore it is worth negotiating with the Kremlin after Russia's defeat in the war against Ukraine.

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said this, according to Sky News.

"It is absolutely necessary for us to achieve Russia's defeat in Ukraine. It is necessary for the sake of European security, freedom and democracy, and that is the only way we can achieve lasting peace in Europe. There are some who say that negotiations are possible now while Russia is still in Ukraine, but I think this will bring a false peace and lead to further aggression in the future," she said.

The minister said the world must learn lessons from the past, such as the failure of the Minsk agreements, to ensure lasting peace in Europe.

"So my very strong message is that we must first defeat Russia and then negotiate," Truss stressed.

Recall, earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that Ukraine in negotiations with Russia itself will determine what is acceptable to it.

In addition, earlier, the head of the Ukrainian delegation to the negotiations David Arahamiya said that Kiev will be able to return to negotiations with Russia only after strengthening the position on the front line. Presumably, this could happen before the end of August.
