Scholz on Ukraine's candidate status: We'll try to get 27 yeses at the EU summit

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised further assistance to Ukraine and expressed hope that EU leaders at the summit will reach an agreement on the country's EU candidate status for Ukraine. He said this in a video address on Saturday, the RND reported.

Olaf Scholz promised Ukraine further assistance in its fight against Russia.

"We will continue to provide financial resources. We will help rebuild Ukraine. We will continue to supply weapons, which are badly needed to defend Ukraine's independence," he said.

The chancellor said it is now a matter of combining solidarity with perspective.

"Because many people are fighting for freedom and democracy in Ukraine, they want to know that it will lead to Europe," he said, noting that candidate status for EU membership is necessary for Ukraine.

"Now we will talk about this in Brussels. Already on Thursday. And we will try to get yes 27 times on a specific decision, a joint decision of the European Union, which also opens up that prospect," Scholz said.
