Scholz: Russia is waging war "with unthinkable cruelty"

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, during a visit to the Kyiv suburb of Irpin, expressed his shock at the damage caused by the Russian war against Ukraine.

"Like Bucha, Irpin has long been a symbol of the unthinkable brutality of the Russian war, the senseless violence. The brutal destruction in this city is a reminder that the war must end," Scholz wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, n-tv notes that Scholz remarked, "It's appalling what this war is bringing in terms of destruction."

"Civilians have suffered, homes have been destroyed. An entire city where there was no military infrastructure at all was destroyed." This says a lot "about the brutality of the Russian war of aggression, which is simply aimed at destruction and conquest," the FRG chancellor said. Russia is waging war "with the greatest cruelty without regard for human life," the TV channel quoted the politician as saying.

Macron, who along with Scholz and the leaders of Italy and Romania also visited Irpen, wrote a message on Twitter in Ukrainian.

"Irpin in Ukraine. We saw the devastated city and traces of barbarism. And also the heroism of Ukrainian women and Ukrainians who stopped the Russian army as it marched on Kyiv. Ukraine is resisting. It should be able to win," Macron noted.

In the Ukrainian capital, French President Emmanuel Macron, along with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Romanian President Klaus Johannis met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
