Ukraine committed to peaceful resolution of conflict with Russia, but in case of escalation will defend itself - Ukraine's permanent representative to the UN

The Ukrainian side is committed to a peaceful resolution of the conflict with Russia, but if Russia chooses the path of escalation, Ukraine will defend itself. This was stated by Ukraine's permanent representative to the UN, Sergey Kyslytsya, at a meeting of the UN Security Council on February 17.

"Ukraine declares its commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict through diplomacy. Ukraine wants peace, security and stability not only for itself, but also for the whole of Europe. At the same time, I want to emphasize that if Russia chooses to escalate, Ukraine will defend itself," he said.

According to Kyslytsya, it is necessary to continue to use all political opportunities for de-escalation.

"It is necessary to revive the Normandy format and the trilateral contact group. These are necessary steps. And in both [negotiating formats] Ukraine and Russia are parties to the conflict. And they create ample opportunity for direct dialogue. This is the dialogue that Russia continues to avoid," the diplomat said.

He stressed that Ukraine is ready to continue dialogue in all formats, including the Normandy format at the level of state leaders.

"We regret that Russia is not ready for the Normandy quartet summit," the postpresident said.
