CEO of Ukrhydroenergo: Ukraine knew about Russia's plans to blow up Kakhovka HPP

In September 2022, Ukraine knew that Russia was planning to mine and blow up the Kakhovka HPP. Ihor Syrota, CEO of Ukrhydroenergo, said this in an interview.

He said that the Russians “started bringing explosives to Kakhovka HPP in advance.”

According to him, it was already clear that they wanted to mine the equipment and blow up the units to make the plant inoperable.

“We thought that after seeing the counteroffensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces that took place in Kharkiv and Kherson, the Russians wanted to mine the equipment and blow up the units so that we would be left with a station that would not work. But we could never have imagined that they would go so far as to blow up the entire plant. This does not fit into any framework at all, and it is impossible to understand their motives,” noted Syrota.

As a reminder, today marks exactly one year since the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant. This event caused the flooding of a number of settlements in Kherson, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions.
