Due to the increase in electricity tariffs, power outages in Ukraine may become longer. This was stated in an interview by Volodymyr Omelchenko, Director of Energy Programs at the Razumkov Center.
According to him, the increase in tariffs will help finance repairs at state-owned power plants. In turn, this will provide Ukrainians with electricity today and next winter. The current deficit has already led to the introduction of blackout schedules, although they do not operate around the clock, but mainly during peak hours.
However, Omelchenko warned of the possibility that restrictions will be further tightened after the increase in energy supply tariffs. First of all, it is connected with summer. It will also be more expensive to repair the power grid due to the hot weather and increased consumption.
“As a result, the deficit in the system will increase and may be particularly large in July. And the duration of outages may seriously increase,” Omelchenko said.
Residents of Kyiv are likely to feel the power outage the most. The current limits do not take into account the presence of critical infrastructure, which is abundant in the capital and sometimes works for the whole country.
