Law on foreign agents in Georgia has become an obstacle on the way to joining the EU, - European Parliament

According to Ekho Kavkaza, the European Parliament has adopted a resolution on the controversial law on foreign agents, which was adopted in Georgia in the first reading. This law may become an obstacle to the country's accession to the European Union.

The resolution was supported by 425 MEPs, 25 were against, and 30 abstained from voting.

The European Parliament called for the suspension of negotiations with Georgia on EU accession while the law on foreign agents is in force.

It also called for sanctions against the head of the Georgian Dream party, Bidzina Ivanishvili, and the release of Mikheil Saakashvili.

The parliament also called on the European Commission to analyze the impact of the law on foreign agents on Georgia's compliance with EU criteria and demanded that the controversial draft law be withdrawn.

At the same time, the law was condemned and it was emphasized that it does not meet EU values and harms Georgia's reputation.
