For the first time in half a century, water is returning to the Kakhovka Reservoir in Velykyi Luh. The legendary place, which had been flooded for 70 years, gave no hope of recovery. However, a miracle has happened. This was reported on the Texty.org website.
Water has started to flow into the Kakhovka Reservoir again. The latest satellite images of the area show that a significant part of the previously drained area of the former reservoir is now covered with water.
This is explained by the fact that the spring snowmelt brought additional moisture to the lower reaches of the Dnipro.
Hryhoriy Kolomytsev, an expert of the Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group and a junior researcher at the Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, said that there is a clear rise in the water level, which corresponds to the situation of spring flooding on the river floodplain.
According to him, in the absence of artificial regulation of water levels, today one can observe on the territory of the former Kakhovka Reservoir the same processes that occur on natural, unregulated river floodplains. Spring floods occurred on these lands even before the construction of the hydroelectric power plant.
