European countries are not interested in extending the gas transit contract with the Russian Federation. This was stated by European Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson following a bilateral meeting with Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko.
"The EU is not interested in extending the gas transit contract with Russia. We have been preparing for the expiration of this contract for two years, when manipulations in the gas market began, and we have alternative options to ensure supply security. Our main focus now is to provide maximum support to Ukraine and to get off Russian gas as soon as possible," Simson said.
It is also noted that the parties discussed the issue of nuclear and radiation safety in view of the difficult situation at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP.
It will be recalled that earlier Galushchenko noted that Ukraine will not negotiate with Russia to extend the gas transit contract after its expiration on January 1, 2025.
