The United States welcomed the agreement between EU leaders to allocate €50 billion in aid to Ukraine, but emphasized the importance of American support in the field of security. This was stated by John Kirby, Strategic Communications Coordinator of the US National Security Council, at a briefing.
According to him, the EU's support program for Ukraine is not intended to help in the security sector.
"The support from the EU will certainly be welcomed by the Ukrainian people, no doubt because it will help alleviate some of the financial difficulties that Ukrainians are already experiencing. And we welcome it. But it will not replace American leadership when it comes to security assistance," Kirby said.
He added that the US administration will continue to urge the Congress to pass an additional national security request, which provides more than €60 billion for military aid to Ukraine.
"As I have said many times, this amount has been carefully considered. Ukrainians need it. And we need Congress to approve this request," the White House official said.
