SBU launches investigation into crash of IL-76 in Belgorod region (UPDATED)

The SBU has opened a criminal investigation into the crash of a Russian Il-76 aircraft in the Belgorod region. This was reported by the SBU in a comment to RBC-Ukraine.


"The Security Service of Ukraine has opened a criminal investigation into the crash of an Il-76 Russian Air Force aircraft in the Belgorod region. The investigation is carried out under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of the laws and customs of war)," the publication was informed.


Currently, the SBU is taking a set of measures to clarify all the circumstances of the crash.


The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.

Both black boxes of the crashed Russian military transport aircraft IL-76 have been found at the crash site in the Belgorod region of Russia. This was reported by Russian media with reference to sources in the emergency services.

An Il-76 near Belgorod was shot down by a Ukrainian Patriot air defense system battery, France Info reports, citing a French military source.


It should be noted that France Info is a radio network owned by France Télévisions, the French national public television.


Earlier, military experts also suggested that the plane was shot down by an anti-aircraft missile system. The Russian Federation itself has not officially specified what shot down the plane.

Russian military and political VIPs were supposed to be on board the IL-76, but at the last minute the FSB forbade them to board, according to the representative of the GUR Andriy Yusov.


According to Yusov, Ukrainian intelligence found out this information after the crash.


Also, according to him, only five bodies were delivered to the morgue in Belgorod the day before. And Russian rescuers were not allowed to inspect the crash site.
