Italy will hold the presidency of the Group of Seven this year and is going to use it to change the narrative that Russia is allegedly winning in Ukraine and the West is tired of the war. This was reported by Reuters, citing a source familiar with Italy's plans for the G7.
During the review of Italy's priorities for the G7 presidency, the key topics mentioned are the conflict in the Middle East, food security, climate change, development in Africa, cooperation with China, and the development of artificial intelligence.
The source also noted that, as during previous G7 meetings, the situation in Ukraine will remain one of the main topics. The G7 leaders are determined to demonstrate their full support for Kyiv, avoid signs of weakness and refuse to take risks two years after Russia's invasion.
"We have to change the narrative about Ukraine," the source said, adding that Russian President Vladimir Putin has lost significant financial, military and diplomatic influence since the invasion.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has previously noted that the issue of artificial intelligence will be a key one during Italy's G7 presidency. The group will mark this topic with a separate session at the summit, which will take place from June 13 to 15 in Puglia, the source said.
It is also noted that the G7 leaders are practically united on the issue of artificial intelligence and have a broad consensus on most key issues, including relations with China.
According to the source, all parties are determined to avoid tensions in relations with Beijing.
