Changes in the export plans of ammunition manufacturers in the European Union may help Ukraine with the supply of artillery shells. This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell in an interview with Radio Liberty.
The head of European diplomacy spoke about this possibility before a meeting of EU defense ministers in Brussels, where they will discuss the plan announced in the spring to supply Ukraine with a million shells over the course of a year.
According to him, about 40 percent of the production goes to third countries.
He emphasized that there is no shortage of production capacity, but the problem is that most of the production goes to other markets.
Borrell suggested considering the possibility of transferring this production to a higher priority for Ukraine.
The senior diplomat also said that the first phase of the EU's plan to provide Ukraine with one million rounds of ammunition per year has been completed, including the provision of existing stocks to the army, which has resulted in the supply of more than 300,000 rounds.
He emphasized that further deliveries will depend on new production linked to signed contracts by EU member states and manufacturers.
