Szijarto: War in Ukraine is an obstacle to joining the European Union

Foreign Minister Peter Szijarto is convinced that Ukraine will not be able to join the European Union while the war in the country continues, Portfolio reports.

Szijarto noted that if Ukraine joined, "war would enter the European Union, which no one wants," so the country cannot be accepted into the EU until peace comes.

The Hungarian foreign minister also accused Ukraine of "violating EU principles on national minorities".

"Since the European Commission also believes that Ukraine has not fulfilled the conditions for membership, we do not consider any further steps in the accession negotiations with Ukraine to be timely," Szijarto said.

"Ukraine is in a state of war, and we see that neither media freedom nor freedom of speech is respected, and we see that elections are not held. Obviously, it would be absurd for the institutions or member states of the European Union to assess how the institutions of the rule of law are functioning in Ukraine under such conditions," he added.
