A group of Republicans in the Senate has put forward the fight against illegal immigrants as a condition for continuing to provide aid to Ukraine. The Wall Street Journal writes about it.
They demand stricter asylum requirements on the southern border with Mexico. This condition "is the first step in what is expected to be a bitter fight to approve the package."
Biden's funding request included additional funds to strengthen border operations, but the president did not propose any changes to migration policy in general.
Over the past two years, the number of illegal border crossings has reached record levels. This has caused, among other things, an increase in crime and problems with fentanyl.
Republicans are demanding that Biden deal with the domestic problem before asking for money for Ukraine.
