European Parliament proposes to transfer military equipment confiscated in Libya to Ukraine

Members of the European Parliament propose to transfer military equipment confiscated last year off the coast of Libya to Ukraine, Politico reports.

According to the publication, MEPs want to find a practical use for 146 units of armored vehicles confiscated last year during two operations of the EU naval mission IRINI as part of efforts to enforce the UN arms embargo on Libya.

It is noted that according to a study published by the Dutch television program RTL Nieuws, members of the European Parliament will put pressure on EU countries to send the seized military equipment to the Ukrainian army.

In particular, Dutch liberal lawmaker Bart Groothuis asked MEPs to sign the letter by the end of the working day on Thursday, October 26.

"We urge you to hand over to Ukraine the seized IRINI vehicles and similar military equipment or ammunition from this or other EU operations," the letter reads.

In addition, Groothuis said that he had spoken to two EU ambassadors who "were both very enthusiastic and said it was very creative," but refused to disclose which EU countries were involved.

It is noted that on Friday, October 27, the letter will be sent to member states from the European Council's Political and Security Committee, which manages security policy, and the European Peacekeeping Committee, which manages EU extrabudgetary funding provided to Ukraine.
