The Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers it necessary to introduce multiple citizenship in Ukraine. But there should be exceptions to the ban on any dual citizenship with the aggressor state. This was stated by Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba in his address to the World Congress of Ukrainians.
"Under these circumstances, it is necessary to preserve their connection with the Motherland. This is about the future of Ukraine and Ukrainians. Therefore, multiple citizenship should become one of the elements of the state policy aimed at preserving and developing the global Ukrainian community," Kuleba said.
The Minister noted that Ukraine has long had a difficult discussion on this topic.
"But I am firmly convinced of the need to introduce multiple citizenship. We should not be guided by the fear of distributing other people's passports in Ukraine, but by the power of the Ukrainian passport in Ukraine and the world," the Foreign Minister said.
He spoke in favor of opening the possibility for millions of Ukrainians abroad to keep their Ukrainian passports or obtain them.
"We have to accept as a fact that withh Ukraine's accession to the European Union, Ukrainian passports will have the same status as passports of neighboring European countries," Kuleba said.
For his part, he emphasized that the policy should be implemented reasonably.
"Gradually, starting with friendly allied countries. And, of course, any dual citizenship with the aggressor state or unfriendly countries should be prohibited," the minister concluded.
