The United Nations urges Israel to cancel the order to evacuate people from the northern part of the Gaza Strip in order not to turn "what is already a tragedy into a catastrophic situation." This was stated by the organization's representative, Stéphane Dujarric, The New York Times reports.
According to the UN, such an evacuation, for which Israel has given 24 hours, will displace more than a million people and lead to "devastating humanitarian consequences."
"The same order applied to all UN staff and those in UN facilities, including schools, medical centers and clinics," Dujarric said.
The UN currently estimates 425,000 displaced people, two-thirds of whom have taken refuge in UN-run schools.
