Moldova's Emergency Situations Commission has called on Moldova's gas transportation system regulator to provide free transportation of European gas to storage facilities through four points on the Ukraine-Moldova border. This initiative means that Ukraine can import up to 17 million cubic meters of natural gas per day through the Trans-Balkan and Iași-Chisinau gas pipelines, BNN reports.
Since Moldova has declared a state of emergency due to the war in Ukraine, the Commission's decisions must be implemented in accordance with the law.
Moldova claims to have sufficient gas reserves for the winter, storing more than a quarter of a billion cubic meters of gas in Romania and Ukraine. The country also indicated that the gas stored in Ukraine was purchased on the free market, not from Gazprom.
The interconnection of Moldova's and Ukraine's gas systems is important because of fears that Russia could destabilize the situation in Moldova.
Ukraine gained access to the gas networks of Southeastern Europe after successful test deliveries by Moldovan gas operator Moldovatransgaz in late January.
