The West has failed to bring the "global South" to its side in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Despite the efforts of Kyiv and Western capitals, "many of the largest developing economies, such as India, Brazil and South Africa, remain neutral on the conflict" and even help Russia circumvent sanctions.

According to the WSJ, the international community has become less inclined to publicly criticize Russia in recent months. Some developing countries have opposed the ideas of demanding reparations from Russia for the war and creating an international tribunal to try the Russian leadership.

Experts note that the West underestimated the level of hostility towards the United States and Europe in some regions of the world, as well as the desire of leading states, such as Brazil and South Africa, to defend their independence and interests on the world stage.

It is reported that at a meeting of world leaders at the UN General Assembly next week, developing countries "seem to be seeking to shift global attention to their priorities: global inequality and debt relief."

However, the publication notes that some progress has been made. For example, at the G20 summit in India, "Russia's attempts to use language criticizing Western economic sanctions failed."

In addition, developing countries have begun to cooperate with Ukraine on specific aspects of the conflict. Ukraine is also planning to organize another summit by the end of the year, similar to the one held in Jeddah.
