The "Georgian Dream" party, which is in power in Georgia, has announced the launch of impeachment proceedings against President Salome Zurabishvili over her trip to Europe, which was not approved by the government. This was stated by Irakli Kobakhidze, the leader of the ruling party, at a briefing after a meeting of the party's political council, Sputnik Georgia reports.
The country's leader Zurabishvili went to meetings with European leaders in support of granting Georgia the status of a candidate country for membership in the European Union, despite the government's refusal, which was announced on August 31. This action is considered a violation of the Constitution and one of the two grounds for impeachment of the president.
"The Constitution of Georgia provides for the only effective legal mechanism for responding to its violation - impeachment... Despite the gross violation of the Constitution, in the current political situation it is impossible to bring the impeachment procedure to an end," said the party's chairman, Irakli Kobakhidze.
He emphasized that the impeachment procedure has no chance of successful conclusion without the support of the opposition, but the "Georgian Dream" party decided to initiate this process.
Successful impeachment of the Georgian president requires the support of 2/3 of the members of parliament, which amounts to 100 votes, while the party has only 84 in the parliament.
