ZNPP is on the verge of a serious crisis caused by the loss of power from the main 750 kV high-voltage line.
In a statement, Energoatom said that on the evening of August 9, 2023, it became known that the power plant was on the verge of blackout, as its main power supply line stopped functioning.
The situation at ZNPP is under special attention due to the current circumstances. The plant continues to be under Russian occupation, which negatively affects maintenance and operation. After the loss of power from the main 750 kV high-voltage line, ZNPP was switched to the remaining 330 kV backup line. However, disconnection of this line could lead to a complete loss of external power, which could cause a blackout.
Experts from Energoatom emphasize that the main threat to nuclear and radiation safety is the fourth power unit of the plant being in a "hot shutdown" state. This power unit is in violation of the license conditions of the Ukrainian regulator.
Taras Tkach, Acting Executive Director of Energoatom, emphasizes that in case of complete loss of external power supply, the main circulation pumps of the plant will be turned off, which will put the power unit in the "natural circulation" mode. However, such a mode will have a negative impact on the reactor installation, and its duration is limited.
Energoatom experts emphasize the importance of returning ZNPP to Ukrainian control to normalize its operation and restore nuclear and radiation safety. They also call on the international community to take measures to prevent nuclear terrorism emanating from Russia.
