Zelensky signed the law on the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism on May 8: it will be a day off

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, signed a bill on establishing May 8 as the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945, reports the website of the parliament.

"On June 12, 2023, it was returned under the signature of the President of Ukraine," says the notification about the status of the document.

May 8 will officially be a holiday and the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously submitted a bill to the Verkhovna Rada establishing May 8 as the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945, and signed a decree establishing May 9 as Europe Day in Ukraine.

The explanatory note to the legislative initiative of the Head of State states that in order to restore historical truth and justice, Ukraine, as an integral part of the great European family, should celebrate the Victory Day over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945 together with all of Europe and the entire civilized democratic world precisely on May 8.

After the adoption of this draft law and entry into force of the document, the event to honor the victims of the Second World War, as well as the measures to commemorate the victory over Nazism, will take place in Ukraine on May 8.

In addition, the draft law proposes to establish May 8 as a holiday when work is not carried out, or if it falls on a weekend, then the weekend will be postponed to the next working day. However, this legal norm will come into force only after the martial law is lifted.
