Oleksiy Chernyshev, the chairman of the board of NJSC "Naftogaz of Ukraine", announced the development of a strategy to forcibly collect compensation from Russia in the amount of 5 billion US dollars. The decision on compensation was made in April 2023 by the Arbitral Tribunal in The Hague.
This was reported by the press service of Naftogaz.
It is noted that the team has been working on compensation for damages for more than six years.
"Of course, we do not expect that Russia will voluntarily pay these funds. Therefore, our legal advisor – the international law firm Covington&Burling LLP – has developed a strategy to compel compensation. , determined by the tribunal," explained Oleksiy Chernyshov.
According to him, "Naftogaz" will use all available mechanisms to enforce the arbitration decision, including the seizure of Russian property abroad.
He does not rule out that it may take several years. But these funds will definitely be collected from Russia.
"The Hague decision is a precedent for other companies that suffered due to Russian aggression. It proves that Russia can be defeated both on the battlefield and on the field of law," the head of Naftogaz emphasized.
Note that in April 2023, the court in The Hague ordered the Russian Federation to pay $5 billion in compensation for the losses and lost property of Naftogaz in the occupied Crimea.
It will be recalled that in February 2022, the Arbitration Tribunal in The Hague began hearings to determine the amount of compensation to Naftogaz for the lost opportunity to use assets in Crimea. The company demanded 10 billion US dollars.
