Azerbaijan and Armenia may sign a peace agreement next week - ambassador

Azerbaijan and Armenia may reach a peace deal to settle the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh next week during the summit of the European Political Community.

This was stated by the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to France, Leyla Abdullaeva, Reuters reports.

"On June 1 in Chisinau, we hope that a peace treaty will finally be signed. This is a historic moment and momentum that cannot be missed," she said.

According to the agency's sources in diplomatic circles, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev will hold high-level talks with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on the sidelines of the summit.

It will be recalled that the day before, at the meeting of the Higher Eurasian Economic Council in Moscow, the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan declared the absence of territorial claims.

The territorial dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia concerns the territory of the so-called Nagorno-Karabakh. It is part of the internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan, although after the collapse of the USSR, the Armenians, who are the majority there, declared it an independent state.

The issue of Nagorno-Karabakh came up again after the six-week war of 2020 between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as a result of which a large part of this territory came under the de facto control of Baku, and the rest was connected to Armenia by a single road - the Lachin Corridor - under the protection of Russian peacekeepers.

But in recent months, Azerbaijan has stepped up hostilities in the region, gradually taking control of an increasingly large territory of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh, including the Lachin Corridor.

In recent months, the Armenian Prime Minister has repeatedly made statements signaling his readiness to recognize Azerbaijan's sovereignty over Nagorno-Karabakh.
