Russia has ways to spy on Denmark after expelling its diplomats - intelligence

Russia may recruit civilians and use journalists and businessmen to spy on Denmark after expelling its diplomats.

According to Sky News, this is stated in the report of the Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET).

The organization said that Russia's invasion of Ukraine increased Moscow's need for intelligence gathering in NATO countries.

Last year, Denmark sent 15 Russian diplomats simultaneously with other EU countries, which undermined Russia's ability to spy on the country's territory. However, Russia's need to obtain information in Denmark has increased, and therefore PET expects that the Russian Federation will try to use other methods of espionage in the country.

"This could be the placement of intelligence officers in Denmark outside diplomatic missions, for example in the role of journalists or businessmen, the use of visiting intelligence officers, or more active recruitment by the Russian intelligence services of any Danish sources in Russia or third countries," PET said.

Denmark is of particular interest to Russia among NATO member states, as it controls the entrance to the Baltic Sea and is a transit state in the context of strengthening the Eastern flank of the Alliance.
