British intelligence: "laundering narratives" is one of the techniques of Russian disinformation

One component of Russian disinformation is "narrative laundering," the British Ministry of Defense said in an intelligence-based report on Russian information warfare.

The British Ministry of Defense indicated that since the beginning of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has systematically used information operations as a key element of its strategy. "She cultivated multiple channels and proxies for disinformation: the deliberate creation and dissemination of false or manipulated information," the report said.

"One component of Russian disinformation is 'narrative laundering,' in which Russia promotes information from proxies or unverified sources on social media, which then infiltrates more mainstream or state media. This is intended to obscure the source of the information so that the Russian state it was easier to distance oneself from the message. It then pushes misleading fragments of the narrative while disguising its interest," the British MoD explained.

"Russian statesmen present fabricated narratives both organized and opportunistically. Their priorities almost certainly include discrediting the Ukrainian government and reducing international support for Ukraine," British intelligence concluded.
