The head of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, called on the West to make more efforts to help Ukraine protect itself from Russian aggression.
He wrote this in a guest article for Tagesspiegel on Monday, along with four other former security policy advisers from the US, UK, France and Italy.
Heusgen, a former foreign policy adviser to former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, warned that simply declaring unwavering support for Ukraine is not enough. According to him, the actions of Ukraine's partners do not match their words so far, and this needs to be changed.
"The current level of gradual and indecisive military support will only lead to a stalemate on the battlefield," Heusgen warned.
As noted in the text, Russian President Vladimir Putin misjudged all aspects of the war when he launched his invasion of Ukraine last year.
"He believed that his army was strong, China fully supported him, Ukraine was weak, and the West was divided. He could not have been more wrong," the article said.
Now, according to the article, Putin's only hope is "that his resolve is stronger than that of his opponents and he can win the war of attrition. We must prove him wrong again."
"We must do everything we can to help Ukraine... We must provide Ukraine with the weapons and ammunition it needs to repel Russia's aggressive war. Freedom must be protected. The sooner Putin realizes that he will not achieve his goal in Ukraine , the sooner it will be possible to achieve peace and end the suffering of the Ukrainian people," the article says.
The head of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, regularly opposes any "red lines" in the provision of military aid to Ukraine.
And earlier in February, Heusgen called for the deputization of Russia before reviving German-Russian relations.
