Germany proposed to include sanctions against Russia's nuclear power industry in the EU's 11th package

The German government proposed to include sanctions against Russia's nuclear industry in the 11th package of the European Union.

This was stated by German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck, DW reports.

"We have seen that Russia purposefully uses dependence in the energy sector for pressure. Therefore, the federal government called on the European Commission to impose sanctions on the civil nuclear sector. This should be part of the next sanctions package," Habek said in an interview with DPA.

According to him, the EU has already advanced far in many areas, in particular in the field of energy. "Only the nuclear sector remains," he said.

Khabek said that the privileged treatment of the Russian nuclear industry cannot be justified by anything. "Nuclear technology is an extremely sensitive area, and Russia can no longer be perceived as a reliable partner here," he emphasized.

The Vice-Chancellor of Germany believes that a transition period is needed in the matter of sanctions on Russian nuclear energy. "But it is important to start and not be afraid of decisive actions in this area as well," he said.

Immediately after his visit to Kyiv in early April, Habek called for the introduction of sanctions against countries that, despite the war in Ukraine, continue to receive uranium from Russia.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, said that the countries of the European Union are preparing to actively work on a new package of sanctions against the Russian Federation. It is possible that the package may include restrictions against Rosatom.
