The government in Berlin agreed to Poland's request to transfer MiG-29 fighter jets from East Germany's stockpiles to Ukraine.

This was learned by Spiegel from its government sources.

Earlier on Thursday, Poland asked to be allowed to supply Ukraine with MIG-29 fighter jets. In response, the German government promised to make a decision this Thursday.

The publication does not specify how many aircraft are affected by the German permit.

Earlier, another publication, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, reported that it could be 5 MiG-29 fighters.

In 2002, Germany sold Poland 23 MiG-29 fighters, which the Bundeswehr inherited from the GDR army.

At the end of March, Jacek Sievera, the security adviser to the President of Poland Andrzej Duda, said that there are still about a dozen such aircraft in service with the Polish Air Force today.

As a rule, contracts for the sale of military equipment from Germany stipulate that the German government must give its consent to a possible transfer to a third party.
