On March 15, the Slovakian government began discussing the transfer of its old MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine.
This was reported by the Slovak publication "Pravda".
Before the start of the meeting, several ministers confirmed in comments to the media that they plan to consider the issue of fighter jets.
"This will definitely be discussed," Defense Minister Yaroslav Nagy said, adding that he would be able to comment in more detail after the meeting. Earlier, the minister said that Slovakia is considering transferring 10 of its 11 MiG-29 aircraft, which were decommissioned last year, to Ukraine.
Vice Prime Minister Veronika Remishova noted that Slovakia actually no longer needs these planes. "It would be best for Slovakia to give them to Ukraine," she said. Remishova added that in this matter the main thing is to do everything in accordance with the legislation and it is important to listen to the position of the Ministry of Justice.
Economy Minister Karel Hirman noted that the fighter jets, if transferred, "will not only help Ukraine defend its territory, its civilians, but also contribute to the defense of Slovakia."
The Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Slovakia, General Daniel Zmeko, is also present at the meeting.
It will be recalled that Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Tuesday that Poland may hand over Soviet-era fighter jets to Ukraine in the coming weeks.
