The great defeat at Vugledar revealed serious problems of the Russian army, - ISW

The investigation of the catastrophic losses of the occupiers during their attempted offensive near Vugledar revealed a number of problems of the Russian army, among which was the inability to reorganize the tactics of fighting and use the advantages of the terrain.

This is reported by the ISW report.

During unsuccessful tank attacks, Russian troops continued to make serious mistakes for several weeks in a row and led tank columns into Ukrainian ambushes.

According to the Armed Forces, Russian forces lost at least 130 tanks and armored personnel carriers during the three-week offensive, which forced them to resort to frontal attacks using infantry.

The Ukrainian military successfully lured Russian tanks into defeat zones before immobilizing Russian convoys and directing them to mined roadsides, then finishing off the vehicles with barrel artillery and HIMARS.

The Russian units deployed in the Vugledar area, primarily the 155th Marine Brigade, are largely staffed by poorly trained conscripts who have already suffered massive losses in the area in October 2022, symbolizing the inability of the Russian armed forces.

ISW experts also note that increasing failures of the Russian military in various directions will hinder the ability of the occupiers to conduct effective offensive operations.

 ISW Key Findings:

The Kremlin may use an amendment to the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which increases penalties for "discrediting" the war in Ukraine, to promote further measures of self-censorship among the critical ultra-nationalist community.

Oleksandr Lukashenko and Chinese leader Xi Jinping signed a package of 16 documents that can help circumvent Russian sanctions.

US officials continue to report that Ukrainian forces are appropriately using Western weapons in Ukraine.

The occupiers may seek to further limit the IAEA's presence at the Zaporizhia NPP in order to achieve de facto recognition of Russia's ownership of the plant.

Serbian President Oleksandr Vucic is apparently reviewing Serbia's close ties with Russia during the war in Ukraine.

Russian troops are strengthening their positions on the state border in the Belgorod region.

Russian troops advanced within Bakhmut and continued ground attacks around Bakhmut, as well as in the Avdiyivka and Donetsk regions.

The occupiers continued offensive operations on the Kupyansk-Svatov-Kreminna line, as well as defensive operations in the south of Ukraine.

Earlier it was reported that the Ukrainian military won over the Russians in the biggest tank battle of this war. The enemy lost more than 100 units of armored vehicles.
