Russia is likely to be concerned about the explosions in Mariupol, as it considered the area inaccessible to conventional Ukrainian strike assets.
This is stated in the intelligence review of the British Ministry of Defense on Monday.
Since February 21, 2023, pro-Russian officials have reported at least 14 explosions in the area of the Russian-occupied city of Mariupol, the report said.
The sites of the incidents include an airport ammunition depot, two fuel depots and a steel plant that Russia uses as a military base. Mariupol, reminds the British department, is located at a distance of at least 80 km from the front line.
"Russia is likely to be concerned that unexplained explosions are taking place in an area that it probably previously assessed as being outside the range of conventional Ukrainian strike weapons," the British Ministry of Defense said.
Despite extensive destruction at the start of the war, Mariupol is important to Russia as it is the largest city captured by Russia in 2022, which it still controls, and is located on a key logistics route.
It will be recalled that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak believes that long-range weapons and the acceleration of support to Ukraine can accelerate the decisive advantage of Ukrainian troops on the battlefield.
