According to the latest data, as a result of a powerful earthquake in Turkey on Monday morning, 912 people died, 5385 were injured.

This figure was announced by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as of 1:00 p.m. local time, the state-run Turkish agency Anadolu reports.

According to Erdogan, the earthquake, which occurred at 04:17 local time on Monday, was the biggest disaster in the history of Turkey since the Erzincan catastrophic earthquake of 1939, when more than 33 thousand people died.

Erdogan clarified that the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.7 and now the government is taking important steps to eliminate the consequences. According to him, search and rescue work on the rubble of buildings in the earthquake zone continues on an uninterrupted basis.

Erdogan said that proposals for assistance to Ankara have already arrived from 45 countries of the world, as well as the EU and NATO.

The earthquake also caused significant destruction and damage in Syria. According to the latest data from the independent Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the number of dead has increased to 400, and more than 1,000 have been injured.

This brings the death toll in both countries to over 1,200 and will likely continue to rise as rescuers continue to find bodies under the rubble.

The epicenter of the earthquake was near the Turkish city of Gaziantep.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that Ukraine is ready to provide necessary assistance to Turkey.

The Embassy of Ukraine in Turkey is cooperating with the Turkish authorities, checking the presence of Ukrainian citizens among the victims, said the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleg Nikolenko.
