"When the Russians come on their knees - take them to Pereyaslav": Duda about the conversation with Zelenskyi

President of Poland Andrzej Duda, speaking during a meeting with Poles in Latvia, said that in a conversation with his Ukrainian colleague Volodymyr Zelenskyi, he offered to hold peace talks with Russia after Ukraine's victory in Pereyaslav.

"Recently, I told President Zelenskyі: Volodymyr, given our history, how once these paths diverged, I ask you, as soon as you defeat Russia, when the Russians come here on their knees to sign the peace, take them to Pereyaslav. Let them they will sign the world with you there. Let them erase all the years of Soviet and Russian influence, and that slavery from the tsarist times until recently, from which you are now defending yourself again," Duda said.

He noted that his country and others "would like to be able to live with Russians in the world, to develop freely, to be able to trade, to build life and wealth together", but this is "impossible, because they attack, rob, kill, want to take away freedom." . In addition, the Polish president expressed confidence that Ukraine will win the war, particularly thanks to international support, and noted that today Ukrainians are defending themselves with "great courage and incredible determination."

"I believe that we will build our prosperity together here, in our part of Europe, as three brotherly nations, together with our common neighbors - the Lithuanians, and with your neighbors - the Estonians, as well as our friends. That here together we will be a monolith of countries , who perfectly understand, know their history, are friends, trade with each other, do business, support each other," Duda emphasized.

He also thanked the Latvian authorities for supporting Ukraine in its defense.

"We share, as I often emphasize, both bread and weapons. Just what we have. Some share their homes, giving way to those who fled Ukraine out of fear before the war," the Polish president concluded.

In January 1654, Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky convened a joint military council in Pereyaslav, where the issue of the acceptance of the Moscow protectorate by the Hetmanship was considered. Then Khmelnytskyi promised the foreman to respect their rights and privileges in case of signing.

On March 21 of the same year, the "March Articles" were approved, which recognized the supremacy of the Moscow tsar over Ukraine. Among other points were also the prohibition of foreign relations with Poland and the obligation of the Moscow government to enter the war with Poland in the spring of 1654.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 19 that the decisive moment of the Russian-Ukrainian war will soon come, which will make it clear whether Ukraine will survive.
