Ukrainian troops have withdrawn from the eastern salt-mining town of Soledar, a military spokesman told CNN by phone on Wednesday.
Earlier this month, Russia said its forces had captured Soledar, but the Ukrainians had not previously confirmed that the city had fallen.
"The Armed Forces of Ukraine withdrew from Soledar in order to save the lives of personnel," said Serhiy Cherevaty, the spokesman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. "We left according to plan, unit by unit."
Cherevaty noted that the neighboring city of Bakhmut remains under constant attack by Russian troops, and "fierce battles are taking place" there.
