Ukraine handed Russia a list of 748 seriously ill and seriously wounded prisoners of war in order to establish their whereabouts and health status. On January 24, Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada's Commissioner for Human Rights, announced this in Telegram.
According to him, the results of checking this list (as well as the counter list of wounded Russian prisoners of war provided to the Ukrainian side) will be the subject of further negotiations on this issue.
"In order to prevent possible manipulations and the spread of inaccurate information, we inform you that the specified list was formed on the basis of data recorded in the relevant registers of the National Information Bureau and the Coordination Headquarters regarding the treatment of prisoners of war," the ombudsman wrote.
On January 22, the Ukrainian Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said that it is very difficult to track the movement of captured Ukrainian servicemen on the territory of the Russian Federation or temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories.
According to the Coordination Headquarters, in 2022, 1,596 people (both military and civilians) were freed from Russian captivity. This required 35 exchanges.
The largest current exchange took place on September 21. Then 215 defenders of Ukraine were released from captivity, of which 108 were from Azov. The best man of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Viktor Medvedchuk, and 55 Russian soldiers were given to Russia.
The first prisoner exchange of 2023 took place on January 8. 50 soldiers returned home.
