Tens of thousands of Russian soldiers died in the war against Ukraine. At the same time, the number of total losses could already exceed a hundred thousand.

General losses
As the publication notes, according to the list of casualties of Russian troops compiled by journalists, as of January 23, it was possible to confirm information about 12,225 killed soldiers and officers. At the same time, recently the number of liquidated prisoners and mobilized has increased sharply.
The BBC emphasized that this figure does not reflect the real level of losses in the Russian Federation, the list may contain 40-60% fewer names of the dead than were buried in Russia.
"Russia's total irretrievable losses (that is, the number of those disabled due to injuries, death or missing) may amount to at least 110,000 people," the publication noted.
Losses among the mobilized and prisoners
Journalists learned from open Russian sources about the death of 800 mobilized Russian soldiers. This number includes 87 soldiers who were eliminated during the strike by Ukrainian defenders on the vocational training center in Makiivka.
It is interesting that, according to the lists of the BBC, 751 soldiers died in the war zone in Ukraine, and another 49 died in the territory of Russia. They died "due to heart problems, due to accidents or due to alcohol abuse."
"The real losses among the mobilized could be much higher, as many reports about soldiers who died in Ukraine since October do not indicate their status," the publication notes.
At the same time, in the war against Ukraine, a large number of prisoners who joined the ranks of PMC "Wagner" were killed. At the beginning of November, 50 names of criminals who took part in hostilities were added to the lists of the dead, but by the end of January, the names of 450 convicts had been established. And their number is constantly increasing.
Many criminals were convicted of serious and particularly serious crimes, the BBC adds. Thus, at the beginning of January, in Ukraine, the head of a gang of killers Andrii Berezhny, who was guilty of a number of high-profile murders, was liquidated.
Casualties among officers
According to the BBC, of the established 12,225 liquidated military personnel of the Russian Federation, 1,627 people, that is, almost 15%, are officers. At the same time, four generals and 52 colonels were among the dead.
The publication clarifies that there is a very high rate of losses among special forces officers both in the Main Intelligence Directorate and in the Russian Guard.
"The junior officers of the Russian army suffered particularly significant losses. They are the ones who have to make the main tactical decisions regarding the conduct of the battle. At the same time, most of them are still young (the rank of lieutenant is most often received at the age of 21-22)," - adds the BBC.
We will remind, according to the data of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, as of January 23, the total losses of the Russian Federation amount to 121,480 soldiers.
