Canada is not yet discussing the supply of Leopard 2 to Ukraine - Prime Minister

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday that the Canadian government is not yet considering sending Leopard 2 tanks.

This is reported by Global News.

"We will consider all requests from Ukraine, but we are not ready for that yet regarding the Leopard 2 tanks. But we are here to provide Ukraine with what it needs to be able to defeat Russia," Trudeau said.

Earlier on Monday, the adviser to the Office of the President of Ukraine, Mykhailo Podolyak, in an interview with The Globe and Mail newspaper, said that Kyiv will ask Ottawa to provide its own Leopard 2 tanks and is "optimistic" about Germany's position on this issue.

Re-export of the Leopard 2 requires the approval of the German government, as the main battle tank is manufactured in Germany. Therefore, other countries that purchased these tanks cannot send them to Ukraine without Berlin's permission.

It will be recalled that last week Poland announced that it is ready to hand over a company of Leopard main battle tanks to Ukraine as part of a coalition with partners. But on Friday, the German government said that it had not yet received an official request from Poland to supply the Leopard main battle tank to Ukraine.

At the same time, according to Bloomberg sources, the German federal government may announce a decision to supply Western tanks to Ukraine this week.
